How to Respond After Eating Something Acidic in Terms of Oral HealthOne of the most damaging things that comes into contact with our teeth are acidic foods and drinks. This includes such things as sugary foods and drinks like candy and soda, as well as citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and limes, and grapefruits, just to name a few.

The reason these can have such a devastating impact on the condition of your teeth is because the acid attacks and softens the enamel on them for a certain period of time. And if these things are a regular part of your diet, it can keep your tooth enamel in a continually weakened state, allowing the other things that you consume to damage it. Here are a couple of suggestions to battle this problem:

Rinse Immediately After Eating


Many folks erroneously believe that a good way to fight this problem is to brush after eating these types of foods. In actuality, that has the opposite effect. Considering that the enamel is already weakened as we just mentioned, brushing your teeth will actually cause more damage. Our suggestion is to rinse with water following your meal or snack.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum


This is another good option, as the gum will work as a kind of a scrub brush, removing food particles and gently wiping away the acid which is sitting on the surface of the teeth. It will also help to loosen other particles lodged between the teeth as well.
