The Basics of a Full Dental Checkup

Posted on 4/25/2020 by Shiv Sharma, DDS
The Basics of a Full Dental Checkup If you have not been to the dentist in some time, you may want to know more about what you will experience during a full dental checkup. We highly encourage our patients to take advantage of this exam, as we can catch any problems before they cause a good deal of pain and expense. The following information will clue you in on what to expect if you need to schedule a checkup with us.

Greeting Our Patients

The first person you will see during your checkup exam is the receptionist. She will greet you and give you a form, if you have not visited us before. This form will allow us to review your medical and dental history. You will also meet your dental hygienist who will take care of cleaning your teeth professionally. Before we do anything dentally, we will consult with you about your medical history. This is important, as we need to know about conditions, such as arthritis, pregnancy, or diabetes, which can affect your dental health. This is a good time to tell us about any medical or dental concerns you may have.

The Cleaning and Examination

After introducing ourselves and getting an idea about your medical and dental history, we are ready to clean your teeth. The hygienist will scrape off the tartar and plaque that has accumulated above the gum line. She will also floss in-between the teeth to get rid of food particles and plaque. She uses a tooth polisher with a spinning head and a slightly abrasive paste. This gives your teeth a nice shine and makes them smoother. Next, we will examine the teeth – checking the enamel for softening and probing the pockets of gum tissue. X-rays are taken to check for issues we cannot visually see. We use digital x-rays, which are much safer and more convenient than conventional x-rays. We perform a checkup to ensure that all your oral health needs are met. If you need a filling or a restoration, we will schedule a time for an appointment. Otherwise, we will schedule another appointment 6 months in advance. This is done so you can follow a regular routine of preventative dental care. Give us a call today for a checkup and cleaning. You will be glad you did.
