How to Keep Your Mouth Clean if You Cut Your Tongue
Ouch! A cut on the inside of your mouth can hurt, especially on the tongue! But don't panic, some basic care is needed to ensure things don't get worse. First, you need to clean the cut just like any other. If there happens to be anything clearly in the cut you'll want to pick it out. Next, you'll want to clean the cut with some water. This can be done by swishing water around your mouth gently.
Your next step is to stop the bleeding. Just like with any other cut you want to apply pressure. Once the bleeding has stopped, it is time to think about how to care for your cut over the long-term.

Continued Care

After the immediate problems have been taken care of, we need to talk about what you should do moving forward. Depending on the cut, you may need stitches or antibiotics to help. That can only be determined by coming in and having us take a look. You will also need to make sure you keep your mouth clean so that no infection becomes inevitable. Your oral hygiene should be a very important focus while healing. Make sure you brush, then floss, and then follow up with anti-microbial mouthwash to keep the area clean.
Finally, you want to make sure you eat foods carefully. Spicy or salty foods could result in tongue pain, so they should be avoided. Eat foods that are gentle on the mouth and they will be far less likely to disturb your tongue while it heals.
If you cut your tongue and are not quite sure how to help take care of the cut, then call our office. Explain what happened, and we will let you know whether we think you should come in or could care for the cut at home. We are here to help!
