Tooth Cavities: How Much Do They Hurt?Cavities — they happen to almost every single one of us. Tooth decay can hit any person at any stage of life and if not treated promptly, it can lead to deep infection and eventual loss of tooth.

At Palo Alto Oral Health, our doctors and Dr. Sharma recommend good eating and lifestyle habits as well as getting routine dental checkups to ensure you have healthy teeth.

How Much Do Tooth Cavities Hurt?

Possibly the worst thing about tooth cavities is not how much they hurt but how much they don't hurt. If you have a cavity hidden in between your teeth, you may never be aware of it until you start to feel the pain.

The problem is that most cavities only start to hurt when an infection has penetrated deep into the tooth, possibly even to your dental pulp. If that happens, you will feel a sharp, deep and persistent pain. You may also see a pimple-like bump in your gums, see your tooth darkening, or experience a bad taste in your mouth.

In many cases, a filling won't be able to get the job done. A deep cavity will often require less conservative procedures like root canal treatment.

This is why, it is very important that you always keep your dental appointments with us. our doctors and Dr. Sharma are trained in identifying cavities in places you might miss. In addition, we also perform dental x-rays to ensure there is no cavity that remains hidden.
