How Oral Piercings Can Lead to Tooth Loss

How Oral Piercings Can Lead to Tooth LossOral piercings can be dangerous to your teeth. An oral piercing can be anywhere in or around the mouth. Tongue piercings, lip piercings, and cheek piercings are considered oral piercings. While this may seem like a good choice at one time in your life, you will probably regret it if your oral piercing leads to tooth loss. We want to help you understand some possible consequences of oral piercings and how they can affect your teeth.

Oral Piercing and Your Teeth

Oral piercings can irritate gum tissue. If your gums become red or inflamed, you will have soreness and discomfort in your mouth. Oral piercings can also cause the enamel on your teeth to be compromised. Your enamel, which is the shiny outer coating of your teeth, is the first line of defense against tooth decay. If your oral piercing causes your enamel to become scratched, chipped, or cracked, you will most likely experience sensitivity and possibly tooth decay. If tooth decay is left unchecked, a cavity could form. If the cavity penetrates the inner part of your tooth, you may lose the tooth.

Your teeth could be in danger if you choose to have an oral piercing. The stud in your mouth can damage existing dental work. Patients have knocked out fillings, displaced crowns, and damaged their braces due to oral piercings. If your teeth become damaged, there is a risk that the tooth may be beyond repair, and it may need to be extracted.
