Managing Dental Pain Without Using Opioids

Posted on 4/11/2022 by Shiv Sharma, DDS
Managing Dental Pain Without Using OpioidsA dentist may have prescribed an opioid painkiller to ease dental pain, so you're not alone. US dentists prescribe 6.4% of all opioid prescriptions. Dental pain associated with procedures like root canals and tooth extraction is usually treated with these painkillers. A prescription painkiller is a decision that parents, and guardians should take very seriously. American opioid addiction has increased dramatically since the 1990s, with over half of the opioids prescribed for dental procedures consumed by someone other than the patient. Knowing the risks of prescription painkillers, you might consider finding a pain management alternative.

Dental Pain Management Alternatives

In addition to Aspirin and Ibuprofen, non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs are effective, non-opioid solutions for treating acute dental pain. The effects of NSAIDs are relieved by providing effective pain relief for bone, dental pulp, and gum inflammation. Studies have found that NSAIDs are as effective as opioids for reducing the intensity and frequency of dental pain after a dental procedure. NSAIDs are usually available over the counter, but your dentist may prescribe you a higher dosage based on the severity of your pain. Acetaminophen is another option for managing dental pain. Physical pain and fever can both be treated with this over-the-counter medicine. It is possible that your dentist determines more than one medication is necessary to treat your pain. Your dentist may put you on a treatment plan that involves both NSAIDs and Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can effectively treat acute dental pain, with efficacy like or better than opioid therapy.
